Lyon climbed into the third and final Champions League spot with one Ligue 1 game remaining by seeing off Monaco at Stade Gerland.

Miralem Pjanic opened the scoring after 28 minutes after a slow start, and Bafetimbi Gomis doubled the lead three minutes after the break.

Les Gones dominated the second half and were repeatedly denied by the impressive Stephane Ruffier, but finally added a third through Lisandro Lopez three minutes from the end.

The win lifted them above Auxerre into third and left them knowing a win on Saturday against Le Mans, who are already relegated, would take them into the Champions League.

After an uneventful first 24 minutes, Lyon suddenly sprang to life and created three chances in quick succession, first Gomis heading Aly Cissokho’s cross on to Michel Bastos, who volleyed wide from a good position.

Then Lisandro advanced into the penalty area, beating Francois-Joseph Modesto, before shooting narrowly wide.

The opener came soon after, though, as Cris flicked on a Bastos corner and Pjanic was on hand to volley past Ruffier.

The hosts had another chance six minutes before the break but Ruffier did well to keep out Gomis’ solo effort.

Three minutes after the restart, Bastos was released down the right. He found Pjanic who in turn flicked on to Gomis for an easy finish from close range.

As the half progressed, Ruffier saved from Ederson before producing a stunning reflex stop to deny Gomis.

After 66 minutes he kept out a Bastos free-kick, then two minutes later made a point-blank save from Lisandro’s header.

In the last 10 minutes, Yannick Sagbo headed a rare Monaco chance narrowly over, before Ruffier again saved, this time from an 18-yard Bastos strike.

But Lyon did get a third three minutes from time, when Lisandro, set free by Ederson, feinted past Ruffier and finishing.

An injury-time own goal by Bobo Balde saw Lyon claim a point at Valenciennes as they kept alive their bid for Champions League football.

Claude Puel’s side had gone ahead in the 16th minute through a stunning volley by Kim Kallstrom before the hosts struck twice in eight second-half minutes through Johan Audel and Renaud Cohade’s penalty.

Valenciennes were on the brink of victory but Balde chested the ball into his own net to give Lyon a point to leave them four points adrift of Lille, who occupy the second automatic Champions League spot, and two adrift of Auxerre in the qualifying place.

Puel’s team have a game in hand against Monaco on Wednesday before they conclude their programme against relegated Le Mans next weekend.

The visitors almost took a sixth-minute lead when Sidney Govou shot from close range but Nicolas Penneteau pulled off a stunning save.

Valenciennes were nestled in mid-table with little to play for but they were providing good opposition, Fahid Ben Khalfallah putting a snapshot inches wide.

However, it was Lyon who went ahead after 16 minutes, Swedish international Kallstrom firing a volley from the edge of the area into the top right-hand corner of the goal.

Foued Kadir had a shot blocked for Valenciennes but Lyon were inches away from doubling their lead when Ederson volleyed inches wide.

The hosts came out strongly in the second half, Siaka Tin firing powerfully inches wide before Kadir fired a shot in which goalkeeper Hugo Lloris pushed on to his own post.

However, Valenciennes’ pressure paid off in the 71st minute when they levelled through Audel, who headed home Ben Khalfallah’s corner.

Eight minutes later the hosts were ahead when Cohade sent the keeper the wrong way following his foul on Ben Khalfallah.

However, Lyon were gifted a potentially vital goal when Balde chested the ball into his own net right at the end.

Podemos, ainda, assumir a vice-liderança do campeonato, caso nossos concorrentes diretos tropecem.

Auxerre paved the way for Marseille to clinch the Ligue 1 title by losing this evening at Lyon.

Despite taking the lead through Ireneusz Jelen in the 15th minute, Auxerre – who headed into the match in second place – left the Stade Gerland empty-handed as goals by Lisandro Lopez and Miralem Pjanic secured Les Gones the win.

Defeat for Auxerre effectively spelled the end of any lingering title hopes and gave leaders Marseille the opportunity to win it at home to Rennes.

Auxerre started brightly and forced a chance in the first minute. Dariusz Dudka was denied by Hugo Lloris as the keeper deflected his half-volley for a corner.

In the fourth minute it was Auxerre again who were in amongst the goalmouth action.

Jelen was put through one on one with Lloris and steered his effort delicately beyond the goalkeeper. However, he could only watch in agony as the shot hit the post for Jean-Alain Boumsong to clear.

The breakthrough did arrive in the 15th minute, however. Jelen intercepted Anthony Reveillere’s terrible backpass before dribbling around Lloris to slot home.

Lyon centre-half Cris had a chance to level five minutes later but saw his header from Pjanic’s free-kick go over Olivier Sorin’s crossbar.

The action died down until the closing moments of the half. A minute before the break Jean Makoun hit the post with a shot after being teed up by good work from Lisandro and Aly Cissokho.

In the final minute of the half, though, the leveller came. Benoit Pedretti brought Cissokho down in the area after a positive burst forward, allowing Lisandro to coolly slot home the penalty.

Buoyed by their timely equaliser it was Lyon who started the second half brightly.

Dead-ball specialist Pjanic tried his luck with a 47th-minute free-kick just outside the box and, while he beat both the wall and goalkeeper Sorin, the ball hit the post to deny him the goal.

A minute later another chance came and went, this time with the referee ruling the goal out. Michel Bastos crossed for Jeremy Toulalan to set up Bafetimbi Gomis but the striker headed home only to see the offside flag raised.

Shortly before the hour mark a one-two between Pjanic and Gomis allowed the latter space in the area. The big striker smashed a first-time effort only to be denied by Sorin’s solid save.

At the other end Auxerre finally forged a chance of their own in the 68th minute. Jelen put Denis Oliech through on goal and, while the Kenyan’s effort was decent, Lloris managed to make the save with his feet.

A Pedretti shot from distance whistled narrowly wide for the visitors while, at the opposite end, Lyon hit the post again. This time it was playmaker Kim Kallstrom, whose left-footed volley flew towards goal only to smash against the post.

Five minutes from time, however, Lyon’s winner came.

Kallstrom whipped in a dangerous cross which Sorin could only punch partially clear, allowing Pjanic to tap in from close range.

A much-changed Lyon team came from behind to defeat Rennes and move to the Ligue 1 summit.

Asamoah Gyan had given Rennes the lead in a first half dominated by the visitors, and it looked as though Lyon coach Claude Puel could regret his decision to rest several key players.

But second-half goals from Michel Bastos and Lisandro Lopez ensured Les Gones would leap to the top of the table – though Champions League opponents Bordeaux have two games in hand.

Lyon lead 3-1 after the first leg of the two sides’ European clash and Cris, Jeremy Toulalan, Anthony Reveillere, Bafetimbi Gomis and Cesar Delgado were left on the bench today with next week’s return leg in mind.

But the visitors were first to threaten when Miralem Pjanic’s shot bounced back to Kim Kallstrom, who set up Ederson to head narrowly wide.

Rennes were not about to lie down, though, and they took a 14th-minute lead when Sylvain Marveaux played in Jimmy Briand.

His shot was pushed away by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and Asamoah followed up to score.

Lyon found Nicolas Douchez in the way as they sought an equaliser before half-time, the Rennes goalkeeper thwarting Maxime Gonalons and Michel Bastos before blocking Ederson’s long-range effort.

Rennes could have doubled their lead early in the second period when Asamoah found Marveaux and he dribbled past Lamine Gassama but saw his shot blocked by Lloris.

Lyon were level in the 52nd minute, though, when Pjanic set Michel Bastos on his way and the Brazilian went past Rod Fanni before finding the roof of the net with a trademark powerful finish.

And it was quickly 2-1 as, just nine minutes later, Ederson crossed for Lisandro to send a header arcing over Douchez and into the net.

There was just one scare for Lloris to survive, the France goalkeeper saving Marveaux’s free-kick on the line 10 minutes from time, as Lyon completed a valuable victory.

Lyon began the biggest week of their season so far with a deserved victory at home to Grenoble.

Les Gones, who face domestic rivals Bordeaux in the Champions League quarter-finals first leg this week, had dropped to sixth following last weekend’s 2-1 defeat by Marseille.

However, goals from Michel Bastos and Cesar Delgado in the second half – combined with Bostjan Cesar’s dismissal for the visitors – took them temporarily back to fourth with everyone else playing tomorrow.

Lyon began brightly and Brazil international Michel Bastos created a chance in only the third minute, sending in a free-kick from the edge of the box which Brice Maubleu dealt with competently.

The left-back was the home side’s bright spark and in the seventh minute another free-kick, this time from further out and to the left, forced Maubleu into another good stop.

Grenoble created something in the 22nd minute but again the chance was from a free-kick. Danijel Ljuboja was the man to take it, shooting powerfully and forcing Hugo Lloris into a smart save to his right.

Lyon ended the half strongly but still the only openings came from set-plays.

Nine minutes before the break Ederson’s corner was not properly punched away by Maubleu and with the goal at his mercy, Michel Bastos looked set to finally open the scoring – only to ludicrously miss the target.

He made amends, however, just three minutes after the restart. With neither side having made a substitution at the break, Ederson tried his luck from the edge of the box.

Maubleu saved, but allowed Bafetimbi Gomis to collect the loose ball and cut it back for Michel Bastos who fired it in.

Lyon had chance to extend their lead after 56 minutes, Gomis being set free to the right, taking on a defender but firing off target.

Grenoble’s task got harder in the 76th minute when Cesar retaliated to a foul by Ederson and was duly dismissed.

Lyon striker Lisandro Lopez had a rare chance 10 minutes from time but Maubleu saved his powerful shot well.

Two minutes later Lyon were in again. Milivoje Vitakic won the ball from Ederson but let the ball slip away to Anthony Reveillere who missed the target from six yards with the goal gaping.

It was Lloris who made the save of the match, however, with four minutes left. The Lyon keeper brilliantly denied Grenoble substitute Laurent Courtois and the visitors’ chance had gone.

Lyon made sure of the win in added time when Miralem Pjanic and Delgado teamed up with the latter keeping his composure to finish off a wonderful move.
