Vargas penalty prompts Viola joy

ACF Fiorentina reached the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in a decade after overcoming Olympique Lyonnais in Florence, a first-half penalty by Juan Vargas ensuring the Serie A side qualified from Group E with a match to spare.

Contrasting halves
Cesare Prandelli had urged his team to take the initiative by sealing the victory that would spare them a nervous night on Matchday 6 at Liverpool FC, who won 1-0 at Debreceni VSC, and Fiorentina responded with a spirited first-half display, hitting the woodwork twice before scoring on 28 minutes. The second period was less straightforward, however, and Sébastien Frey was called into action to make a crucial late stop from Lisandro before the home crowd could finally celebrate progressing from the group stage for the first time since 1999/2000.

Lloris reflexes
With the visitors from Ligue 1 depleted in defence, the Viola attacked from the start and with Vargas in particular causing problems down the left, Fiorentina took to their task with determination. News that Liverpool had gained an early lead may have strengthened home resolve further, and the Italian club would have been ahead on ten minutes but for the woodwork and the reflexes of Hugo Lloris.

Viola chances
Mario Santana showed exceptional control and athleticism to chest Vargas’s cross in mid-air before volleying first time from the edge of the area. When the ball came back off the upright, Alberto Gilardino was on hand to meet the rebound, but France No1 Lloris tipped his instant effort wide. From the ensuing corner Gilardino was there again, but now his glancing header rebounded off the far post.

Marchionni reward
Save for Bafétimbi Gomis and Cris narrowly failing to connect with crosses from the impressive Miralem Pjanić, Claude Puel’s men barely threatened. The penalty that ultimately separated the sides was reward for the hosts’ greater purpose and the endeavour of Marco Marchionni, who chased down a seemingly lost cause, stole in front of Aly Cissokho and was brought to ground by the full-back. Vargas sent Lloris the wrong way from the spot.

Prodigious Pjanić
The prodigious talent of Pjanić looked Lyon’s most likely route back into the contest, and the 19-year-old twice tried his luck from distance early in the second period. The greater momentum was with the Gigliati, however, and they almost doubled their advantage when Gilardino dragged his attempt wide after being picked out by Marchionni, who was then denied by a last-ditch tackle from Cissokho when released by Santana.

Frey heroics
An even better chance fell to Gilardino after a sweeping move involving Riccardo Montolivo and Lorenzo De Silvestri, but the unmarked Italy striker steered the defender’s cross wide from 12 metres. Tension now began to creep into the home team’s display as they ceded ground to OL and gave away a series of free-kicks. Viola hearts were in mouths when Frey elected to punch another long-range set-piece by Pjanić and, after Jean II Makoun’s effort through a crowded box was scrambled away, Lisandro raced through at the death and unleashed a venomous strike. Frey and Fiorentina held firm, and the final whistle prompted lengthy celebrations.

L’OL sans ressource

La première place du groupe E se jouera dans deux semaines. Déjà qualifié pour les huitièmes de finale après ses deux bons résultats contre Liverpool, l’OL s’est incliné sur le terrain de la Fiorentina (1-0), mardi soir, dans le cadre de la 5e journée de Ligue des Champions. Grâce à un penalty de Vargas (25e), à la suite d’une faute de Cissokho, la Viola se sort également de la phase de groupes, laissant Liverpool sur le carreau. Les Gones, eux, n’ont pas su trouver la faille lors de leur révolte très tardive, la faute à un excellent Sébastien Frey.

Quand l’OL fait le bonheur de la Fiorentina. Et la détresse de Liverpool. Les hommes de Claude Puel, déjà qualifiés, se sont inclinés (1-0), mardi soir, du côté de Florence. Après son nul mitigé contre Grenoble (1-1) et avant de recevoir Rennes le week-end prochain en Ligue 1, le représentant français s’oblige à disputer une dernière journée de Ligue des Champions avec la première place du groupe E en jeu. Le duel se jouera à distance avec la Viola, qui, grâce à cette victoire, se hisse aussi en huitièmes de finale, pour la première fois dans cette formule, et éjecte du même coup les Reds.

La Viola fait le travail

Sorti vainqueur de sa double confrontation contre Debrecen, en inscrivant pas moins de 9 buts en 2 matches, le club toscan a trouvé les ressources suffisantes pour faire son bonheur. Dans une rencontre peu emballante, les hommes de Cesare Prandelli ont parfaitement joué le coup, ouvrant la marque sur penalty sans pour autant dominer les débats. Cissokho fauchait par derrière Marchionni dans la surface et le gaucher Vargas transformait la sentence (1-0, 28e). Déjà, lors du premier quart d’heure, la Viola aurait dû ouvrir le score, touchant les montants par deux fois. Santana voyait sa reprise de volée percuter le poteau (11e), avant qu’une tête de Gilardino ne touche également du bois (12e).

Les Gones avaient pourtant réagi entre cette première chaude alerte et l’ouverture du score. L’OL décidait de sortir de sa torpeur en contrôlant les débats grâce à son milieu de terrain, notamment un Pjanic à la justesse technique précieuse. Cris n’était pas loin de reprendre un coup franc lointain de Källström par exemple (24e). Mais concrètement, les visiteurs ne se montraient nullement dangereux, la faute surtout à un Gomis peu disponible. L’ancien Stéphanois avait été préféré à Lisandro, resté sur le banc. Govou et Gomis, les ailiers du jour, ne faisaient rien de bon. Källström et Pjanic devaient ainsi tenter leur chance de loin (45+3e et 48e), sans trouver le cadre.

Les Gones tombent sur Frey

Solide défensivement, la Viola ratait l’occasion de faire le break à l’heure de jeu. Parfaitement lancé en profondeur par Montolivo, Marchionni était repris magnifiquement par Cissokho (63e). Quelques instants plus tard, l’ancien du FC Porto était cette fois-ci à la peine défensivement et laissait filer De Silvestri, dont le centre n’était pas correctement repris par Gilardino (68e). Puel réagissait enfin. Lisandro Lopez faisait son entrée en jeu à la 67e minute, à la place de Bastos. Puel passait en 4-4-2 (Pjanic glissant sur la gauche), avant de sortir le transparent Gomis pour Ederson (74e).

L’OL ne se jetait pas à l’abordage, mais dominait clairement la fin de rencontre. La révolte tardive n’allait finalement engendrer aucun but. Pjanic tentait une nouvelle fois sa chance de loin, sur un coup franc plein axe de 30 mètres, mais Frey repoussait le danger d’une manchette (79e). L’ancien portier de l’équipe de France sortait ensuite deux parades de grande classe pour assurer la qualification des siens. D’abord sur une reprise de Makoun à la suite d’un corner (87e), puis sur une puissante volée de Lisandro (91e). Artemio-Franchi pouvait exploser de joie.
